Bellevue Middle School and York Elementary School for an assembly on bullying.
Dr. Jay has appeared on Nickelodeon, Hallmark Channel, Fox, NBC, CBS, ABC,
PBS and many local syndicates and has also written with Disney Productions. He
used humor in a way that caught the students’ attention to get the serious message
about bullying across.
Dr. Jay’s overall message is empowering students to know what to do in bullying
situations. He told students, “You have ‘THE POWER’!” He used the acronym
STAMP to help students remember what to do.
S= Stay Away from Bullies. Research shows that just by doing this, it
will help reduce bullying by 50%. Dr. Jay used a definition given to him by a
kindergartner. He said bullying is “someone trying to be the boss of you.” This
can happen physically (hurting you or demanding stuff), emotionally (hurting your
feelings) or socially (hurting your reputation).
T= Tell Someone. 3rd -8th graders only tell 10% of the time. Kids perceive
that adults do not care. To prove them wrong, Dr. Jay had all the adults in the
audience stand. He then told the students to look around. He said these are the
people you should tell. They love you and know what it feels like to be bullied. He
also stressed that if you do not tell, bullies get away with their behavior and they win.
A= Avoid Bad Situations. Students were encouraged not to go anywhere by
themselves because, many times, this is when the bully strikes. It is important to stay
close to adults. “When you can see an adult, you are safe!”
M= Make Friends. Friends help you stand up to a bully. A bully is less
likely to target you if you have a group of friends around you.
P= Project Confidence. Students that have a positive demeanor are 3 times
less likely to be bullied. Dr. Jay talked with students about putting their “Game Face”
on and pretending not to care about bullying, even if it does bother you. Bullies will
recognize this confidence and will leave you alone because their behavior is no longer
bothering you.
The students had a great time and learned some important lessons in the process.
We would like to thank Ruth Packing, Mr. Don Spurlock, Mr. Bollinger and Mrs.
Coppus for making this assembly possible and bringing it to our schools!
